The Playground Protests

‘The Playground Protests’ was presented as part of The National Festival of Youth Theatre at The Ayr Gaiety.

‘Respect your teachers. Obey them. Accept their punishments. Punishment may include being hit with a whip, cane, belt, shoe, ruler or paddle. Failure to accept this punishment will result in more punishment’.

In 1987, corporal punishment was banned in UK state schools. The role of school children was key in bringing an end to this terrible practice, as young people from all over the UK joined to lead strikes, protests, marches and riots in order to make their voices heard.

The Playground Protests is a brand-new musical, telling the stories of brave young people who weren’t afraid to stand up and fight for their rights.

Written & Directed by Marlisa Ross, New Music & Musical Arrangements by Stuart Bird, Produced by Theatre Alliance.
